Rishabh Pant is a chirpy character on the field. The Indian vice-captain has made a reputation for quick runs and remarks from behind the stumps. Currently recovering from a foot injury, Pant congratulated his rival Chris Woakes after the latter’s retirement.
‘You left a mark on me’: Rishabh Pant congratulates Chris Woakes
Chris Woakes was left out of the England squad for the Ashes later this year in Australia. The 36-year-old played all 5 Tests in the India vs England series. He dislocated his shoulder while fielding in the final Test, and heroically came to bat left-handed in England’s 6-run defeat. Woakes opted against surgery to try and be ready for the Ashes but was overlooked.
Tributes have since flown in for the 36-year-old who made his debut for England in 2011. Among them was India star Rishabh Pant, who took a hilarious approach. Pant was injured in Manchester after being hit on the foot by Chris Woakes. The India keeper had tried a reverse sweep but missed it only to be carried off the field in a golf cart. Pant joked that now retired, Woakes can give his bowling arm and his foot some rest.
“Happy Retirement Woakesy. You have been amazing on the field. Lots of discipline, a big smile and always good vibes. Now you can finally give that bowling arm a rest and my foot too. You definitely left a mark on me before retirement. Wishing you a fantastic journey ahead,” Pant wrote on X on Tuesday.
The injury suffered Pant has kept him out of action since. The left-hander was not picked for the Asia Cup 2025 squad, which India won on Sunday. He also missed out on the IND vs WI Test squad, with Ravindra Jadeja serving as vice-captain. Pant is currently rehabilitating at the Centre of Excellence and will aim to make the squad for the India vs Australia ODIs.
