Mohammed Shami’s international career seems to have hit a dead end. The veteran pacer was once again ignored for selection in the upcoming IND vs AUS ODI series. Shami has been a fixture in the 50-over format, but the Men in Blue have pivoted from the 36-year-old with eyes on the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.
Mohammed Shami not in ODI plans, omitted from India vs Australia series
Mohammed Shami will continue to spend more time on the sidelines as he was not selected for the ODI series against Australia. The IND vs AUS ODI series is India’s first since their triumph in the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Shami had made a comeback from a year out during that tournament and featured in all matches.
However, things have since taken a turn for the veteran fast bowler. A lacklustre IPL combined with injury issues meant that he did not return to the Test team for the India vs England series. He was also omitted from the Asia Cup and the IND vs WI series. ODIs seemed the best format for Shami to make a comeback, but he has once again been ignored from selection. In 11 ODIs that he has been a part of since his comeback, he has managed to pick 11 wickets, averaging 30.63.
India have opted to trust Mohammed Siraj to lead the attack, who did not make the cut for the Champions Trophy. Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy make the pace attack.
Shami has struggled with injuries and form which has contributed to his exile. At 36, he isn’t getting any younger and will be 38 in time for the World Cup 2027. The Bengal is featuring regularly in domestic cricket, plugging away at any chance of representing his country.
