Team India put up a mediocre show in the first-ever men’s international match in Mullanpur. After Quinton de Kock’s blazing 90, the South African bowlers did the damage and handed India its largest defeat in a T20I at home (by 51 runs). The horrible forms of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill continued, with Tilak Varma’s fiery fifty going in vain. Meanwhile, the tickets for the T20 World Cup 2026 are now live and running, with Bookmyshow being the official platform. Also, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who isn’t part of the current T20I team (but should be), has put forward his desire to play in the tournament. Elsewhere, Virat Kohli’s return to domestic cricket may not be far long.

Yashasvi Jaiswal wants to play T20 World Cup
Yashasvi Jaiswal has not played a T20I since July 2024, yet he has made it clear he still dreams of featuring in a T20 World Cup. His timing is interesting since the next edition in India and Sri Lanka is some weeks away and he is nowhere near the current squad. The management has backed Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, leaving Jaiswal stuck behind a packed queue that also includes Sanju Samson. Gill’s leadership status makes him virtually undroppable despite modest T20 returns this year. Jaiswal admits all he can do is wait and keep scoring, but barring an injury crisis, his chances for 2026 are remote. Read more here.

Virat Kohli returns to domestic cricket for Delhi
Virat Kohli has confirmed he will return to domestic cricket for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, ending weeks of speculation after the BCCI pushed players to feature in domestic tournaments. Delhi’s list of probables includes both Kohli and Rishabh Pant, giving the side rare star power ahead of their opener against Andhra Pradesh on December 24 in Alur. Kohli has not played the event in 15 years, but his recent form, including two hundreds in his last five innings, means Kohli wants to play as much as he can with his current form. Read more here.

T20 World Cup tickets are live

Suryakumar, Gill continue to fail
India’s strong year in T20Is took a hit in Mullanpur as South Africa levelled the series with a 51 run win built on Quinton de Kock’s explosive 90. India’s long term worry resurfaced as Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill failed again. The captain’s decline has been massive, averaging 14.35 in 2025, while Gill has gone 14 innings without a fifty and was out first ball. India’s chase never recovered after early wickets and only Tilak Varma showed fight with a 62. South Africa controlled the game with disciplined bowling, Baartman sealing it with 4 for 24. No handshake drama, says ICC
The ICC has asked India’s management to avoid another handshake standoff when the Under-19 teams of India and Pakistan meet in Dubai on December 14. After India refused post match handshakes during the senior Asia Cup, the Women’s ODI World Cup and the Emerging Asia Cup, the governing body does not want politics overshadowing junior cricket. PTI reported that India U-19 manager Anand Datar has been briefed, although the players have not been told anything yet. The ICC views another boycott as poor optics and wants the matter settled before the match, leaving the final decision with the BCCI. Read more here.

Arshdeep Singh made it a mess
Arshdeep Singh endured a nightmare spell in the second T20I against South Africa, sending down a 13 ball over that featured seven wides, the most ever in a T20I. Bowling in front of Yuvraj Singh at his home ground in Mullanpur, the left armer repeatedly missed his wide yorker and lost all control as Quinton de Kock waited for something hittable. The chaos forced Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav into an on field huddle while Morne Morkel looked on in disbelief. Arshdeep conceded 18 in the over and finished with 54 runs against his name as India racked up 16 wides overall. Read more here.
