Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that the white-ball cricket suits Shubman Gill’s style of play. The Indian vice-captain slammed his first-ever century at an ICC event in India’s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh. Ponting said that while Gill has not been able to get the best out of him in Tests, he has been phenomenal in ODIs and T20Is.
“Deserves to be no.1 ranked ODI batter”
Speaking to ICC Review, Ponting lavished praise on Gill, noting that he deserves to be the number one ranked ODI batter. He reckoned that it was a great sign for India that the vice-captain was able to open his Champions Trophy account with a bang. Dubbing Gill as a “big game player”, Ponting pointed out that he had been playing well in the IPL as well where he is the captain of Gujarat Titans.
“He’s been a very, very good international player for a number of years. He hasn’t sort of transferred that over into Test Match cricket yet, but his white ball cricket over the last three or four years has been outstanding. Look, he’s a big game player as well. He’s played really well in IPLs over the last couple of years, obviously being captain of his franchise there,” Ponting said.

Ponting opined that white-ball cricket suited Gill’s style of play. He noted that the batter was not a big-hitter who would try to do something very different. He added that Gill just scored runs and had the ability to smash boundaries against fast-bowlers at will.
“I just think that the white ball game really suits his style of play. One day cricket, he can come out and be nice and aggressive early on in the power play with the field up, get some boundaries away early by playing good, naturally aggressive cricketing shots,” he added.
