At the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday, joy and heartbreak played out side by side. India ended years of waiting with their maiden Women’s ODI World Cup crown, defeating South Africa by 52 runs. But as one half of the ground erupted in celebration, the other stood still. South Africa failed to end their own drought. Veteran Marizanne Kapp, South Africa’s seasoned all-rounder, was in tears after another final slipped away. Who knows if she was playing her last ODI!
Emotional touch after final
In a touching moment that would melt everyone’s heart, India’s Jemimah Rodrigues and Radha Yadav were seen consoling Kapp, their Delhi Capitals teammate in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The trio has shared the dressing room for three straight WPL seasons, helping DC reach the final each year. Their bond off the field was on display as they came together in the aftermath of an emotional ICC Women’s World Cup final.
Kapp had been one of South Africa’s standout performers throughout the 2025 World Cup. The veteran all-rounder was instrumental in guiding her team to the final, especially with her match-winning 5 for 20 in the semi-final against England, a spell that made her the highest wicket-taker in Women’s World Cup history, surpassing India’s Jhulan Goswami.
Her contributions with the bat were equally vital, including a quickfire 68* against Pakistan and a gritty 42 in the semi-final. But in the final, fortune deserted her. She went wicketless and managed only four runs before being dismissed by Shafali Verma.
