The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is trying to handle the Mohammed Shami situation. In the last few weeks, the veteran pacer has publicly refuted claims made by Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar that he isn’t fit for selection, and that’s the reason why Shami hasn’t played for India since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Shami-Agarkar situation
Shami had stated that the selectors hadn’t provided him with an update and that if he wasn’t fit, how could he be playing in the Duleep Trophy and for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy?
“About giving an update, it’s not my responsibility to give an update or ask for an update. It’s not my job to give updates on my fitness. My job is to go to the NCA (National Cricket Academy), prepare, and play matches. Woh unki baat hai unko kaun update deta hai, kisne nahin diya (That’s their matter who gives them updates or not). It’s not my responsibility,” Shami had said.
Agarkar responded by saying that he’s had multiple chats with Shami over the last few months, and the medical team doesn’t think he’s fit for international cricket at the moment. The chief selector also added that Team India would’ve loved to have him in Australia and England before, but that couldn’t happen.
Shami didn’t like Agarkar’s response and lashed out after taking 7 wickets against Uttarakhand, saying, “Let him say whatever he wants.”
RP Singh does damage control
To ensure the matter doesn’t get more out of hand than it already has, BCCI sent the newly appointed selector from Central Zone, Rudra Pratap Singh, to Kolkata.
According to Sportskeeda, during Bengal’s second 2025-26 Ranji Trophy match against Gujarat at the Eden Gardens, RP spoke at length with Shami after the second day’s play ended.
RP, like Shami, hails from Uttar Pradesh, and while the latter moved to Bengal for his cricket aspirations, the regional connection might help. At least, that’s what the BCCI will hope.
