BCCI Media Rights Auction ends, Viacom18 bags TV and Digital Rights for 5996.4 Cr

Viacom18 will pay a whopping Rs 67.8 Cr per match to BCCI for the next 5 years

The richest cricket board in the world is now richer. The BCCI media rights were sold on Thursday with another windfall for Jay Shah and Co. Viacom18, staved competition from Disney Star and Sony Sports, to bag both TV and digital rights.

Disney Star, Sony and Viacom 18 had all submitted their technical bids and were the only players in the auction. It was however Viacom18 who won the race, bagging the bilateral media rights for Rs 67.8 Crore per game.

BCCI Media Rights Auction: What We Know

  • BCCI Media rights were sold via an e-auction on Thursday, August 31.
  • Broadcast and Digital packages sold separately, priced at Rs 20 crore and Rs 25 crore per match respectively.
  • Viacom 18 purchased both TV and Digital Rights.
  • Sports 18 will broadcast all India domestic and international home games.
  • The live streaming will be on the JioCinema app.
  • The new cycle comprises 88 games, including 25 Tests, 27 ODIs, and 36 T20Is
  • Viacom18 have bagged the rights at Rs 67.8 crore per game
  • While the highlight of the deal is India Men’s Cricket Team, broadcasters will also bag women’s bilateral rights for free.

The new media rights cycle runs for 5 years, starting with the India vs Australia series in September. BCCI has promised at least 88 home games, with the figure potentially rising to 102. Disney Star had won the rights last time in 2018, picking up the combined media rights for Rs 60 crore per game. With bilateral cricket having fallen behind, BCCI had reduced its asking price to Rs 45 crore per game.

BCCI has managed to rake in a price Rs 7.8 crore higher than their condition. Viacom18 will shell out Rs 5966.4 crore over five years. The per match cost comes at Rs 67.8 crore.
