Shreyas Iyer is currently in Sydney, recovering from his blunt injury to his abdomen.

The BCCI on Saturday confirmed that India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from hospital in Sydney after sustaining a serious abdominal injury during the third ODI against Australia. The 30-year-old had suffered a blunt injury to his abdomen while fielding, which resulted in a laceration to his spleen and internal bleeding.

According to the latest BCCI medical update, the bleeding was immediately arrested following a minor procedure, and Iyer has responded well to treatment. The board stated that he is now “stable and recovering well” and will remain in Sydney for a few more days for follow-up consultations before being cleared to travel back to India.

The BCCI also expressed gratitude to the medical teams in both Sydney and India, including Dr Kouroush Haghigi and Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, for ensuring Iyer received timely and specialised care. This confirmation brings relief to fans and teammates, given the initial severity of the injury and reports suggesting he was admitted to the ICU. Iyer himself gave a relieving update a couple of days ago.

Shreyas Iyer’s injury

The incident occurred during the third ODI in Sydney on October 25, when Iyer dived full-length to complete a sharp, over the head catch of Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. In trying to hold on to the ball, he landed awkwardly on his left side and immediately clutched his ribs. It looked like a routine fielding effort gone wrong, but scans later revealed internal trauma to his spleen, which required medical intervention.

Team physio Kamlesh Jain and medical staff assisted him off the field, and he was soon taken to hospital for scans. Initial assessments had suggested a rib injury, but the full extent became clear only after detailed imaging.

Iyer, who had scored 72 runs in the series before the injury, was showing signs of returning to form after a rough 2024. His absence now leaves a void in India’s middle order ahead of the ODI series against South Africa later this month. With his recovery still being monitored, the chances of him making that series are gone. He would look to make a comeback against New Zealand, who will tour India at the turn of the year.
