A team of former Bangladesh cricketers, including players like Mohammad Ashraful, Elias Sunny, Mohammed Nazimuddin, and Naeem Islam, returned to Bangladesh from India and withdrew from the Asian Legends League, which is a T20 tournament for retired cricketers. The team traveled to India on March 9, reported by Bangladesh media.
They were excited to play. The team was set to start their games on March 10 against the Indian Royals in Udaipur, with another match scheduled against the Afghanistan Pathans at the same venue the next day. However, neither of these matches will take place for the Bangladesh Tigers.
Why did Bangladesh withdraw?
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has asked the team to return home. This decision came after they discovered that the tournament did not have approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “We were supposed to take part in the Asian Legends League. But the tournament is not officially approved by the ICC. So, we won’t be taking part and are returning home,” said Mohammad Ashraful, who was to lead the Bangladesh Tigers.
Herschelle Gibbs expresses frustration
Herschelle Gibbs, the former South Africa batter hired as the coach for the Bangladesh Tigers, expressed his frustration on Twitter. He mentioned that he had not even received the travel plans for the tournament. With the withdrawal of Bangladesh Tigers, the tournament now has only four teams. It will conclude with the final match on March 18.
Why are big players playing in the league?
This league is featuring stars like Shikhar Dhawan, Kedar Jadhav, Saurabh Tiwary, Upul Tharanga, Chamara Kapugedera, Shapoor Zadran, Ambati Rayudu and Faiz Fazal among the other big names in the cricketing world.
