Rishabh Pant got hit on his right foot and got a metatarsal fracture during Day 1 of the Manchester Test.

Indisputably, Rishabh Pant was going to be the biggest name in the Delhi Premier League (DPL). He was retained by his DPL 2024 franchise, Purani Dilli 6 for the highest price bracket – 21 lacks. However, the Delhi’s elite league has dealt a hammering blow as Pant is now ruled out of the tournament, starting August 2.

Brave Rishabh Pant did unthinkable

On Day 1 of the Manchester Test between India and England, an unfortunate incident took place, involving Rishabh Pant. Troubles began when he attempted a reverse sweep against Chris Woakes, only to be struck flush on the right foot. He collapsed in agony and had to be helped off, with initial scans confirming a fractured metatarsal. Reports came that the medical experts ruled him out for six weeks, at least.

But Pant had other plans. On Day 2, ignoring medical advice and the pain, he walked out to bat after the fall of Shardul Thakur. Limping, yet fearless, he took on the English bowlers and smashed a counter-attacking half-century, delighting the Old Trafford crowd. It was a statement indeed.

Rehab starts, Pant to miss Delhi Premier League

However, he was seen in crutches on the last day and thanks to the historic 203-run stand between Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, Pant didn’t need to bat on Day 5. However, he has been ruled out of the fifth and final Test. India already have Dhruv Jurel, who will replace Pant in London. Meanwhile, the BCCI has also flown in N Jagadeesan, who will act as backup keeper.

Now, Pant, who has started his rehab, will definitely miss Delhi Premier League 2025. This is certainly a missed opportunity for Purani Dilli and DPL, who would’ve definitely had Pant’s services had he not been injured.

India don’t have any series lined up in August, leaving regular names like Pant and Harshit Rana enough space to play in the league. While Rana will lead the North Delhi Strikers, Pant will sit out and rehab. While fans would hope he gets ready in time for the Asia Cup 2025, Purani Dilli will think about their strategies.

Last year, Pant played only the inaugural clash, with Lalit Yadav leading the side in the rest of the tournament. He is expect to captain the squad once again.
