Ashes on the horizon, Chris Woakes opts against surgery despite shoulder injury

Chris Woakes suffered a dislocated shoulder at The Oval vs India but opted against surgery with an eye on The Ashes.

England fast bowler Chris Woakes is inching towards recovery following a shoulder injury in the India vs England series. Woakes landed awkwardly on his shoulders on Day 1 of the 5th Test and had his arm in a sling for two weeks. The 35-year-old is eyeing the Ashes later this year for a comeback.

Chris Woakes inching closer to full fitness after shoulder injury

Chris Woakes suffered a nasty injury in the 5th Test against India. Woakes had his arm in a sling and played no further part in the Test. He however bravely did come to bat as England slipped to a narrow 6-run defeat.

Certainly good news for me. That’s the best way to look at it. Obviously out of the sling and feel like I can move it a lot better now which is good two weeks down the line,” Woakes told SKY Sports on the sidelines of The Hundred.

The pacer is the most experienced in England ranks following the retirements of Stuart Broad and James Anderson. With the Ashes looming, the veteran is focused on rehabilitation and not opting for a surgery.

“Going to try and (stay) focused on the rehab and get it as strong as possible. Ideally not for surgery for now but we’ll see how that goes and hopefully we can get it nice and strong again,” he added.

Woakes was the only England bowler to feature in all 5 Tests of the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy. While the 35-year-old hasn’t had the best of records in Australia he played a stellar role in the home Ashes in 2023. His experience would be vital amongst a new look England attack under Ben Stokes.
