With India winning the Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026, it is likely that Ajit Agarkar will get a further extension

Former Indian cricketer Ajit Agarkar has reportedly requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to extend his tenure as chief selector until the 2027 ODI World Cup. The ex-Indian star took over the reins of the selection committee in 2023 and was given an extension last year before IPL 2025 for a year. However, with India winning the Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026, it is likely that he will get a further extension as the team will now start focusing on preparing for the ODI WC in 2027.

Ajit Agarkar to remain chief selector till 2027 WC?

As per Times of India, the BCCI has received a request from Agarkar to extend his tenure as chief selector until the World Cup in 2027. The report states that discussions have already taken place over the matter and that the BCCI could agree as they don’t have other options at present to replace Agarkar. The report also states that while a former Indian cricketer from West Zone is one of the strong contenders to replace Ajit Agarkar as chief selector, there has been no development on the matter yet.

Since taking over in July 2023, Agarkar has done exceptionally well. His experience as a former cricketer, coach (Delhi Capitals), and selector (Mumbai) has seen him succeed. During his tenure, Team India has won the T20 World Cup 2024, the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the T20 World Cup 2026. The Men in Blue also reached the final of the ODI World Cup 2023.

Last year, the BCCI offered Agarkar a contract extension till June 2026 and he had accepted it. Explaining the rationale behind extending his tenure, a BCCI official pointed out that not only had India won titles but Agarkar had also supervised the transition of the team in Tests and T20Is.

Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months back,” a BCCI official told the publication.
