Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu rallied from a game down to eke out a hard-fought win over Thailand’s Supanida Katethong to enter the semifinals of the Syed Modi International Super 300 tournament. The 26-year-old defeated her Thai rival, seeded sixth in the tournament, 11-21, 21-12, 21-17 in a quarterfinal match that lasted one hour and five minutes. Sindhu will face fifth-seeded Russian Evgeniya Kosetskaya in the semifinals.

A win at the Syed Modi International is crucial for PV Sindhu not only because of the USD 150,000 prize, but to end her drought of titles at the BWF level. The Indian ace hasn’t lifted a title on the tour level since her World Championship win in 2019. While a second Olympic medal did come her way last year, Sindhu will be itching to set the record straight after so many near misses in 2021. Sindhu had last won a BWF title in 2019.

A win over Evgeniya Kosetskaya will move her one step closer to ending her dry spell, and Sindhu will be hoping to do so having cleared one obstacle in Supanida Katethong. Kosetskaya meanwhile defeated the likes of Tereza Švabikova, Yaelle Hoyaux and Vaidehi Choudhari to reach the semi-finals of the Syed Modi International.

As far as the head to head record between the two is concerned, PV Sindhu has never lost to Evgeniya Kosetskaya in her career. The duo have competed twice, with Sindhu winning in straight games on both occasions.
