Asian Games: Saurav Ghosal second seed in singles squash event, men’s team gets top billing

The likes of Saurav Ghosal, Joshna Chinappa, and Dipika Pallikal will lead the Indian squash team at the Asian Games.

Squash is one of those sports in India, which pretty much goes unnoticed despite producing decent results. In the last decade, the Indian squash team has done consistently well at the Asian Games and is the fourth-best country in terms of medals. India has won 13 medals overall, out of which one is gold, followed by three silvers, and nine bronze medals.

For the Asian Games 2023, eight players are being sent as part of the Indian squash team led by Saurav Ghosal. The veteran Indian will enter the competition as the second seed in the men’s singles event and has a bronze and a silver to his name already. On the other hand, Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng is the top seed in the singles event.

Saurav Ghosal has a bye in the first round and will play Kuwait’s Ammar Al-Tamimi in the second round. Overall, squash gets underway on September 26, and will end on October 5. In the women’s singles, Joshna Chinappa and Tanvi Khanna will lead India’s charge. Japan’s Satomi Watanabe is the no. 1 seed.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on the mixed doubles event, where the team of Dipika Pallikal and Harinder Pal Sandhu are the top seeds. Another team in the fray will be the fourth-seeded team of Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh. Once again, in the men’s doubles event, the Indian squash team is the top seed. In Group A, India is pitted against Pakistan, who is the no. 4 seed.

Anahat Singh (15) is the youngest member of the Indian squash team for the Asian Games.
