One of the hallmarks of the multi-nation events is the use of glorious fireworks, during the opening and closing ceremonies, but the Asian Games in China is a little different. The event whose opening ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 23, will not have the traditional performance.
“The opening ceremony of the Hangzhou Games will break the tradition of having fireworks performance, as we are sticking to a green philosophy in hosting the event,” said Sha Xiaolan, the general director of the opening ceremony.
“As we want to reduce the carbon emissions as much as possible, we have decided to cut the fireworks performances.” He, however, added that the Asian Games opening ceremony will see some new technologies in the form of visual effects, with the theme of, “people, beauty, and emotions.”
“The most important thing is that we want to spread our philosophy of environmental protection, and that’s why we finally made the decision,” Sha added. Meanwhile, the Asiad is already underway, as the events in football, cricket, volleyball, rowing, and modern pentathlon have started.
The Indian team has sent a 655-member strong contingent to the Asiad, who would be participating in 39 events. There is no team sent for beach volleyball. In the last edition, India had won 70 medals, out of which 16 were golds.
