The underworld just got a little more crowded—and a lot more dangerous. Glory Jam and Soft Source Publishing have officially unleashed a brand-new demo update for their reaper-themed roguelike, Grim Trials, fresh off the stage at Indie Fan Fest 2026.
Based heavily on community feedback from recent Discord playtests, this update isn’t just a coat of paint; it’s a mechanical overhaul designed to make your journey through the afterlife feel faster, smoother, and more rewarding.
What’s New in the Grim Trials?
The developers have been busy tuning the engine of destruction. If you’re hopping back into Avelin’s shoes, here is what you can expect:
- The Skill Tree Has Branched Out: Six new Attack Combo nodes have been added (Charge, Aftershock, Finisher, Clash, Momentum, and Shadowstep). These feature two levels and stackable damage, allowing you to chain together more lethal sequences.
- Run and Gun (Crossbow Edition): You asked, they delivered. You can now fire your crossbow while moving, adding a much-needed layer of mobility to ranged combat.
- Visual Power-Ups: New Gear VFX now trigger directly on the Trial Grounds, so you can actually see your build coming to life as you grow stronger.
- Balancing the Scales: The “drinkmaxxing” meta is officially over. Potions are now capped at 12 per slot. Additionally, bosses have gained stun immunity, and crafting recipes have been smoothed out for a better gameplay flow.
Note: To see these changes in action, the devs recommend creating a new save slot to ensure all the new systems calibrate correctly.
In this heavy metal action roguelite, you play as Avelin, a young woman who died too soon and was recruited into Death’s ranks. To see her living love once again, she must hunt impure souls and face the demons of her own making. It’s a coming-of-age story wrapped in sharp steel and high-octane combat
