Overwatch Season 1 Relaunch Breaks Records and Ramps Up the Action. Check out the new Overwatch Heroes and more.

The “2” is officially gone, and a new era has begun. Blizzard has pulled off a massive “soft reset” of the franchise with the launch of Overwatch Season 1: Reign of Talon. Far from just a simple update, this relaunch has successfully revitalized the player base, with Overwatch shattering its previous records to reach a staggering 165,651 concurrent players on Steam for the first time ever.

From a massive influx of new heroes to a complete overhaul of how roles work, here is everything you need to know about the Season 1 launch.

Overwatch Season 1: Five Brand New Heroes Join the Roster

In a move that caught the community by surprise, Blizzard launched five new heroes simultaneously to kick off the season. These additions expand the strategic depth of the game and bring the total roster to 50.

Domina (Tank): A high-tech “poke tank” from Vishkar who uses segmented hard-light barriers and a long-range Photon Magnum.

Anran (Damage): A fiery DPS who can revive themselves in a “Vermillion Revival” explosion and uses burning fans to melt enemies.

Emre (Damage): The long-awaited former Overwatch soldier finally enters the fray with a burst rifle and life-stealing “Siphon” rounds.

Mizuki (Support): A member of the Hashimoto clan who heals via a bouncing “Kasa” hat and creates protective sanctuaries.

Jetpack Cat (Support): The community meme is finally a reality! This high-mobility feline provides aerial heals and “tows” allies to safety using a literal lifeline.

New “Sub-Role” Passives Overhaul the Meta

Role passives are no longer one-size-fits-all. Every hero on the roster has been categorized into Sub-Roles, each with a unique passive designed to reward specific playstyles:

  • Tanks:
    • Bruisers (e.g., Mauga, Hog): Reduced critical damage and a speed boost when at low health.
    • Initiators (e.g., Winston, Doomfist): Light self-healing while airborne (perfect for Dive).
    • Stalwarts (e.g., Rein, Sigma): Heavy resistance to knockbacks and slows.
  • Damage:
    • Sharpshooters (e.g., Widowmaker, Cassidy): Critical hits reduce movement ability cooldowns.
    • Flankers (e.g., Tracer, Genji): Health packs restore significantly more health.
    • Specialists (e.g., Mei, Bastion): Eliminating an enemy grants a temporary reload speed boost.
    • Recon (e.g., Sombra, Pharah): Damaging enemies below half health reveals them through walls.
  • Support:
    • Tacticians (e.g., Ana, Zen): Can “overcap” ultimate charge (up to 25%) to carry over into the next cycle.
    • Medics (e.g., Mercy, Kiriko): Healing allies also heals the player.
    • Survivors (e.g., Brigitte, Illari): Movement abilities trigger health regeneration.

Overwatch Season 1 – Console Upgrades: Field of View (FOV) Options

After years of community requests, console players finally have parity with PC. Season 1 introduces a Field of View (FOV) slider for Console, allowing players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S to increase their perspective from the standard 80 degrees up to 103 degrees. This change is a game-changer for tracking high-mobility heroes like Tracer and the new Jetpack Cat.

Stadium: Vendetta, Serenza, and More

The “Stadium” mode receives a major update with the introduction of Vendetta, a melee-focused Damage hero who wields a massive greatsword. Alongside her comes the new map Serenza, specifically designed for high-intensity brawls.

Vendetta’s kit focuses on “Onslaught” stacks, where she gains attack speed and movement as she lands hits, making her a terrifying presence in the close-quarters skirmishes of the Stadium.

The relaunch also brings a Competitive Reset, a sleek new 3D UI, and the return of a modified Loot Box system via the “Conquest” meta-event. Players can choose their allegiance—Overwatch or Talon—to earn faction-themed rewards throughout the season.

With over 165k players on Steam alone, it’s clear that Overwatch is back in a big way. Whether you’re a returning veteran or a new recruit, there’s never been a better time to jump into the fight.
