Retired wrestler Sakshi Malik expresses desire to become WFI president

Sakshi Malik had announced her retirement from wrestling in December 2023, and has maintained she won't return to the mat.

2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi Malik has given a new twist to the ongoing Wrestling Federation of India fiasco. In a recent interview with BBC Hindi, the former wrestler expressed her desire to contest the body elections. She went on to say that, she’d like to become the WFI president, and improve the standards of wrestling in India.

Answering to a query, if she’d fight WFI elections in the future, Sakshi replied, “Yes, I would certainly like to contest. But I’m scared of unecessary allegations, that I protested (against Brij Bhushan Singh), to become the president myself. I want to become the president, of course.

I’ve given so many years of my life to wrestling, I have all the knowledge about the sport. I’m educated, Ive done my Masters as well. Why can’t I be the president? Just become I’m a woman? I want say directly, yes. If I get a chance to contest, I will.”

The entire battle between the top wrestlers of the country, including Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat as well, has been going on for over a year. Since then, the new WFI regime has come in place, and faced a suspension from the sports ministry.
