The Indian Super League (ISL) is the top-tier football league in India, established in 2013. It is organized by the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) and its commercial partner, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL). The league features 13 clubs competing in a season that runs from September to March.
The highly anticipated Indian Super League 2024-25 season commenced on September 13 with an exciting match-up between the reigning league champions, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and the ISL 2023-24 Cup winners, Mumbai City FC.
ISL 2024-25 Format & Rules
Following the format of the last year, all 13 ISL teams will play against each other in a home and away format. The leader at the end of the league stage will win the ISL League Shield. The top six teams from the final league table will qualify for ISL Cup knockouts.
The first and second-placed teams will earn a direct entry into the semi-finals, while the teams from third to sixth spots will compete in playoffs for the remaining two semi-final places.
ISL New Rules
All 13 ISL teams need to have an Indian assistant coach who holds an AFC Pro License or its equivalent. If the head coach at any time is dismissed or suspended, the Indian assistant coach will take over as the interim head coach.
A player or club can now appeal against a red card if they believe the referee’s decision was wrong. The AIFF Disciplinary Committee will review the appeal before any automatic suspension begins. Each club will now have an option of one concussion substitution per match over and above normal substitutions. The opposition will also receive an additional substitution.
Under this new category, a club can add three players who will be left out of salary cap brackets. For a player to be considered a homegrown player of a club, he must be 23 years old or less and should have been with the team for at least three preceding years before the start of the ISL season.
