If the Indian cricket team were to be a ride in 2025, it would be a roller coaster. The year commenced with a defeat in Sydney. The Test match, which happened to be Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s last, saw Jasprit Bumrah get injured, and India failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) for the first time in 10 years.
Another ICC trophy
However, the next 8 months were like a dream. Team India didn’t lose the next 6 series/tournaments. It began with comfortable white-ball series victories over England, which was topped off by the 2025 Champions Trophy. It was Team India’s 2nd ICC title in the space of 12 months. This came after India didn’t win one for 11 years.
Rohit Sharma-Virat Kohli Test retirement & England tour
After 2 months of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Team India faced their biggest challenge of the year. Rohit and Kohli retired from Test cricket just a month before, with Shubman Gill taking over the reins from Rohit. The tour couldn’t have gotten more difficult.
But India fought valiantly and ended up drawing the series. That was despite Bumrah playing just 3 matches. Gill scored 754 runs, the 2nd most for India in the series. KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja scored over 500 runs as well. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj ended up as the highest wicket-taker, with 23.
Asia Cup trophy and drama
After a month’s break, India beat Pakistan thrice to lift the 2025 Asia Cup trophy. India went undefeated, but controversy followed. From refusing to shake hands to getting denied the trophy by PCB and ACC Chief Mohsin Naqvi.
Rohit-Kohli return
Returning as one-format players, all the eyeballs were on Rohit and Kohli in Australia. But Gill became the third prong as BCCI announced him as India’s ODI captain as well. India lost the 50-over series, but the veteran showed that they still belong with excellent performances. The T20I series was marred by rain, but India won as Abhishek Sharma continued to destroy bowlers.
Another Test whitewash at home
All was going well. And then tragedy struck. After beating the West Indies with relative ease, India won their second Test series at home in 12 months. South Africa whitewashed India, 0-2. First on a controversial Kolkata pitch and then on a proper one in Guwahati.
Heads rolled. Gautam Gambhir was under fire as Gill missed the two games due to an unexpected neck injury. India managed to end things with back-to-back white-ball series wins, but all one remembers as the year ends is that South Africa Test whitewash.
