For a player who averages 50 in Tests, can he possibly have a weakness? In the 27 matches that Yashasvi Jaiswal has played in his career, he has gone on to score 2440 runs with seven hundreds and 12 fifties; but then the way he played against Marco Jansen in the first Test in Kolkata — trying to forcefully play a cut shot, that only raises suspicion.
Yashasvi Jaiswal vs Marco Jansen a big concern
Jaiswal has been excellent — but if one digs deep, he has gotten out 8 times against the left-arm pacers, perhaps due to this same so-called weakness of cutting the ball early on in his innings. That means he averages only a modest against such bowlers and the bowlers include the likes of Nandre Burger, Mitchell Starc and of course, Jansen.
| Vs | Runs | Outs | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left-arm pacers | 174 | 8 | 21.8 |
| Right-arm pacers | 1151 | 27 | 42.6 |
| Left-arm spinners | 424 | 8 | 53 |
| Right-arm spinners | 691 | 6 | 115.2 |
So that this weakness is not exposed again, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak seems to be training hard with the opener. As per a report in the Indian Express, for two days on the trot in Guwahati, throwdown specialist Nuwan Seneviratne was used to replicate, what Jansen could do against Jaiswal in the second Test in Guwahati, which would have more pace and bounce.
Can tackle all spinners
In fact, upon finding no net bowler, who bowled left-arm pace, he even got Jasprit Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy to bowl him just outside the off stump. The report suggested that he was beaten a few times, but then it would take some time to really get over this fault.
As for other bowlers, it should not be much of an issue for Jaiswal. Against right-arm pacers, he averages 42, having scored 1151 runs. He could also be best equipped to handle Simon Harmer, as he is aggressive in his approach and averages a staggering 115 vs right-spinners. For tackling Keshav Maharaj too, it shouldn’t be much of an issue. Against such bowlers Jaiswal averages 53.
