Despite getting overlooked in the shortest format of the game, Yashasvi Jaiswal can be considered as a three-format player. He is touted as the present and future of Indian cricket, boasting enough talent to dominate any bowling attack in the world. The 23-year-old has been a sensation and has taken international cricket like a duck to water.
Jaiswal shares his captaincy desires
While Jaiswal has been vocal about wanting to win a World Cup for Team India, the southpaw now has set his sights on leading a team. While speaking on a podcast hosted by Raj Shamani recently, Jaiswal mentioned his dreams that he wants to tick off going forward. Apart from keeping himself fit for long and working on his skills, Jaiswal put forward his desire to grow as a leader and perhaps become a captain one day.
“Currently, I am focusing a lot on my fitness. I am learning more about my body as I feel that with time, I need to be fitter and need to work more on my skills,” Jaiswal said. “Every day, I have to work on myself to evolve myself into a leader. One day, I want to be a captain.”
What Jaiswal mentioned is nothing unsurprising given that he is a player who can manage to play over 10 more years. However, India has just recently earmarked Shubman Gill as an all-format skipper, having made him the ODI captain. Rohit Sharma’s era has been officially ended, with Gill leading both Rohit and Virat Kohli now in the ODIs. Gill is already India’s Test skipper and has done quite well thus far.
Jaiswal, who has been selected in India’s ODI squad for the Australia series, might just not get to lead his nation anytime soon. With Gill just starting on his journey and having a commendable support from the BCCI, he is likely to remain the face of the nation. However, Jaiswal’s dream could be fulfilled in the IPL. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) have been involved in a flurry of changes recently, having removed almost all of their coaches. Sanju Samson, the current captain, is touted to exit the franchise, leaving a window of opportunity open for Jaiswal.
