The Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) has always produced its share of banter and heated moments, and the 2024–25 edition was no different. One of the highlights came from India’s young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who took on Australia’s 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas in a hilarious yet fiery exchange that went viral on the stump mic.

Months later, Jaiswal has opened up about the now-famous “Oye Konthas” incident and the role Rohit Sharma played in keeping him grounded. During a candid carpool interview with Mashable India, Jaiswal recalled how Konstas had been targeting him throughout the series. The youngster, known for his cheeky on-field presence, was relentless in his chatter when India batted. Jaiswal admitted that while it annoyed him, it also pushed him to respond in his own way.

“When I was batting, he was giving it to me. He’s a bit weird. When I was batting, he was forcefully saying things to me. I got a bit angry and said, ‘Okay’. Nathan Lyon bowled a ball, and I gave it a whack. Actually, I hit him on purpose that day,” Jaiswal revealed with a laugh.

But it wasn’t just with the bat. Jaiswal, fielding close-in at silly point, also felt the pressure. “Later, I was fielding at silly point and Steve Smith was lifting his bat and I said, ‘Baap re’. It was a really flat wicket. That time, Rohit Sharma gave me some bamboo,” he said, referring to the skipper’s stern words after the stump mic picked up his cheeky sledge of Konstas: “Oye Konthas, kya ho gaya? Ab shots nahi dikh rahe kya?”

The youngster has often credited the former Test captain for shaping his mindset. “Rohit bhai is at a different level. It is great fun being around him. With him, even when he says something, we learn a lot from his words, but we know he’s saying things for our own good. His words inspire me a lot,” Jaiswal said.

The two formed a steady opening pair from Jaiswal’s debut in July 2023 until Rohit’s Test retirement in May 2025. While Rohit has moved on from the longest format, Jaiswal is set to continue carrying the baton as India’s next-generation opener. The “Oye Konthas” episode still draws laughs in the Indian cricket scene.
