Yashasvi Jaiswal breaks silence on Asia Cup snub over Shubman Gill

Yashasvi Jaiswal was part of Team India at the T20 World Cup 2024.

India have marched into the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025 unbeaten, but one of the biggest talking points around the squad was the absence of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Despite being in stellar form across formats, the left-hander was overlooked when the squad was announced, with selectors not only recalling Shubman Gill but also elevating him to the role of vice-captain.

Jaiswal’s omission was massive given his recent performances. In the 2025 IPL, the 23-year-old piled up 559 runs in 14 matches at an average of 43 and a strike rate of 159.71. His tally featured six half-centuries, with a highest score of 75. Earlier this year, he had also dominated the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, scoring 411 runs in the Test series with two hundreds, one in the opener at Leeds and another in the final match that helped India set up a famous win.

While the debate over his exclusion rages on among fans and experts, Jaiswal himself has chosen to stay grounded. Speaking to Mashable India, he said: “I don’t think about it. It’s all in the hands of selectors. The decisions are taken according to the team combination. I will do whatever I can.”

The Mumbai batter insisted he would rather focus on making more runs and improving his game than worry about factors beyond his control. “When my time comes, things will fall into place. I just want to keep working on myself and keep working hard,” he added.

Jaiswal has already carved a space for himself in international cricket since making his debut in 2023. In T20Is, he has featured in 23 matches, scoring 723 runs at an average of 36.15 and a blistering strike rate of 164.31. His record includes one century and five fifties, with a best of 100.

Having risen from a modest background to wearing the India jersey, he often speaks about his ultimate dream of winning the ODI World Cup for the country. He was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2024, though he did not get a game.
