Pakistan cricket team star Mohammad Rizwan was reportedly replaced as the ODI captain due to his refusal to promote betting companies, a report has claimed. On Tuesday, the PCB named Shaheen Afridi as the new 50-over skipper, bringing the curtains down on Rizwan’s short reign as captain. Pakistan’s musical chairs around captains continues as the keeper-batter is the latest star to face the axe.
Why was Rizwan replaced as Pakistan captain?
As per Times of India, a PCB source claimed that the main reason for Rizwan’s sacking as Pakistan captain was because of his refusal to endorse betting companies. The source claimed that the keeper-batter had informed the board about his decision following which he was replaced as captain. The source claimed that Rizwan was against PCB’s collaboration with surrogate betting firms.
“Rizwan had informed the PCB that he wouldn’t endorse betting companies, which is the main reason behind his sacking. He was against the PCB’s collaboration with surrogate betting firms,” a PCB source said.
There was no mention of Rizwan in the PCB’s statement, just a line announcing Afridi’s return as captain for the ODI series against South Africa next month. The move was reportedly decided after a meeting between head coach Mike Hesson and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Rizwan, who led Pakistan to respectable series wins in Australia and South Africa last year, saw his tenure unravel after a disappointing home Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year.
“A meeting of the selection committee, also attended by Pakistan’s white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, decided that Shaheen will lead Pakistan’s ODI side against South Africa,” said a PCB release.
