If MI made a statement on Sunday, Rajasthan Royals (RR) went one step further on Monday night. They didn’t just beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK), they ran through them. An 8-wicket win and 47 balls to spare and suddenly RR are sitting at the top of the IPL points table.
What made it worse for CSK was how one-sided this turned out. They were bowled out for 127. RR chased it in just 12.1 overs. Same pitch, two completely different batting efforts.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi blows the game away
This game lasted as long as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi decided it would. Three days after turning 15, he walked out and made a mockery of the chase. A 15-ball fifty, joint third-fastest in IPL history, killed the contest inside the powerplay itself. RR were 74/0 in six overs. That was the game.
He finished with 52 off 17. The way he picked lengths early, especially against new-ball specialists Matt Henry and Anshul Kamboj, it looked like he had more time than anyone else out there. Once he got going, CSK had no answers. Even after his dismissal, the remaining 53 runs were just a formality. Yashasvi Jaiswal (38* off 36) and Riyan Parag (14* off 11) wrapped it up without fuss. This was one of the fastest 120-plus chases in IPL history. RR got there in 12.1 overs.
CSK’s batting collapse set the tone
The game was already slipping away in the first six overs of CSK’s innings. Everyone was excited to see Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad bat together in the yellow of CSK. However, it didn’t prove to be a memorable outing.
After the powerplay, CSK were 19/3. Nandre Burger and Jofra Archer went through the top order. Sanju Samson didn’t last long. Ruturaj Gaikwad was cleaned up after a poor shot. Ayush Mhatre fell trying to force it. Sarfaraz Khan came in early as an Impact Player as CSK were in a disarray. They never recovered.
There was a small attempt to rebuild, but Ravindra Jadeja, against his former side, shut that down quickly. He removed Sarfaraz and Shivam Dube in the same over. From there, it was just damage control. Jamie Overton’s 43 off 36 dragged them to 127, which already felt under par. It turned out to be nowhere near enough.
