Who could be Team India's next coach? Cheteshwar Pujara has a simple answer

R Ashwin had retired from cricket in 2024, after the second Test in Australia, which had surprised one and all.

Gautam Gambhir’s position as the Indian Test coach was questioned a few times during the IND vs ENG series. But then a favorable 2-2 result meant, that there weren’t many fingers raised from there on. Despite some blunders, the team under him managed to put up a spirited performance.

Who After Gautam Gambhir?

Yet, the question still arises — if the BCCI does want to look at a new coach, who could it be. India batter Cheteshwar Pujara picked his best man for the job. In a Q&A session on ESPNCricinfo, the batsman was asked, who could most likely become India coach. And Pujara replied, “Ravichandran Ashwin.”

R Ashwin’s tactical brilliance stands without any doubt. Even in his playing days, he was a thinking bowler, who could just toy with batsmen’s plans. As a result, he finished with 537 Test wickets to his name, only second behind Anil Kumble’s tally of 619 scalps. Ashwin, after retirement, has also been active on his Youtube channel, offering insights on different cricketing topics.

Ashwin a Good Choice or MS Dhoni?

Earlier, Aakash Chopra had discussed the possibility of MS Dhoni taking over as India coach in the future. Chopra made it clear, that for now, Thala doesn’t look interested, since it requires a lot of time. “That is a big one. I don’t think he is interested. Coaching is a difficult job. Coaching keeps you as busy as you were when playing, and sometimes even more than that. You have a family, and you say that you have done the same thing your entire life, you have lived your life out of a suitcase, and you don’t want to do that job now,” Aakash said on his YouTube channel.

Going further, Pujara answered another question — ‘which player is likely to finish with all the major records?’ It was another prompt answer from him, as he replied, “Virat Kohli.” The star batter also hung his boots from Test cricket recently, and his last series was against Australia, Down Under.

Post that, he played in the Champions Trophy — that the Indian team won, and also went on to lift maiden IPL title for RCB. For now, he is only active in ODIs, and could be next seen in action, in the ODI series vs Australia, in October.
