Team India’s next match after Champions Trophy

The Indian cricket team is set to return to Test cricket in June 2025, facing England in a five-match series. After missing out on the World Test Championship final due to consecutive series losses against New Zealand and Australia, India will be eager to make a strong start in the next cycle. However, the England tour promises to be a challenging one. The Indian squad for this series might look quite different from the one that played in Australia.

There are considerable doubts about whether Rohit Sharma will continue playing Test cricket, as he opted out of the final Test against Australia following a series of low scores in the format. Virat Kohli’s inclusion in the starting XI is also uncertain, but his excellent form in the ICC Champions Trophy could secure his place. Should Rohit miss out, India will need to find a new opener. Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal are likely to be the primary openers in Rohit’s absence, with Abhimanyu Easwaran as a backup.

If Gill is promoted to the opening position, India will need a number three batter. Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been consistently scoring runs, might be considered for this role, especially after his absence was felt during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Alternatively, KL Rahul could open alongside Jaiswal, with Gill batting at number three. Virat Kohli is expected to be the number four batter, while Rishabh Pant will take the role of the specialist wicketkeeper batter, with Dhruv Jurel as the backup keeper.

Sarfaraz Khan might be dropped without having received fair opportunities. India might introduce fresh faces like Tilak Varma or Ruturaj Gaikwad in the Test team. Nitish Reddy is likely to be a certain starter given his impressive performance in Australia.
