The much-awaited India vs Pakistan contest in the T20 World Cup 2026 is threatened by rain in Colombo on February 15, and this could be bad news not just for the teams but also for fans and the broadcaster. The Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology issued an alert on Friday, stating that rain could potentially play spoilsport in the contest. Pakistan have agreed to play against India after concluding discussions with the ICC to break the deadlock that prevailed for a couple of weeks.
What happens if IND vs PAK match is washed out?
As per the rules, both India and Pakistan will split the points if the game is abandoned without a single ball being bowled. There is no reserve day in place for the IND vs PAK tie, which means that the match will not take place if it is washed out on February 15. A five-over contest is required at any cost to determine the winner and hence, if that it not possible due to rain, then the game will be abandoned. In that case, India will qualify for the Super 8s while Pakistan will have to secure one more win to proceed ahead.
Should rain play spoilsport leading to the IND vs PAK tie in Colombo not happening, then the official broadcaster would have to bear significant losses. Additionally, the Sri Lanka Cricket will have to issue refunds to all the ticket holders, which means that they will incur heavy losses as well. Earlier, a report had claimed that the ICC would have incurred a loss of $174 million if Pakistan had decided to boycott the tie against India. While Pakistan has now agreed to take the field on Sunday, rain could potentially play spoilsport.
As per Accuweather, about 4 hours of rain is expected on the matchday, and there is a 26% chance of a thunderstorm as well.
