Virat Kohli hits 4th straight fifty against Australia in ICC ODI tournaments

Australia were all out for 264 in the first semifinal vs India, with Mohammed Shami taking a three-fer.

Virat Kohli hit his 4th consecutive half-century in an ICC ODI tournament against Australia as India continued to remain solid in their chase of 265 in the first semi-final of the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai on Tuesday.

Virat Kohli & his love-affair with Australia

Virat Kohli’s consistent run against Australia started back in 2019 when he scored an aggressive 82 and followed that up with 85 to ace a tricky chase in Chennai in India’s opening match of the 2023 ODI World Cup. When the two teams met again in the final, Kohli scored 54 although his slow partnership with KL Rahul met with severe crtiticism.

Overall, this was Virat Kohli’s 74th ODI fifty and this came a few days after a sensational unbeaten hundred against Pakistan, also in a successful run chase in Dubai. Virat Kohli owns almost all the significant record in one-day internationals. In 2023, he became the only cricketer to hit 50 ODI hundreds and in the course of his 51st hundred on February 23, Kohli became the fastest of only three batters to reach 14,000 ODI runs.

Kohli surpasses Sachin Tendulkar

On Tuesday, Virat Kohli also became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to score over 8000 runs in one- day internationals while chasing.

While Sachin Tendulkar, who still holds the record for the most ODI runs, scored 8720 runs at 42.33 (17 hundreds and 52 fifties) in run chases, Kohli went past 8000 at an average well over 64 and celebrated the milestone with his 40th fifty in the second innings of one-day internationals.
