Tilak Varma to captain South zone in Duleep Trophy, no Sai Sudharsan in squad: Report

Tilak Varma will reportedly captain the South Zone team in the upcoming Duleep Trophy which will take place in August-September

Tilak Varma is all set to lead the South Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy which will take place in August. The BCCI decided to revert back to the zonal format for the upcoming edition, which means it will be South Zone, North Zone, West Zone and East Zone. A report has now claimed that Hyderabad batter Tilak Varma is all set to captain the South Zone in the Duleep Trophy.

Tilak Varma to captain South Zone

As per The Indian Express, Tilak will be the captain of the South Zone while Azharudeen will serve as his deputy. The squad comprises of some notable names including Sai Kishore, Devdutt Padikkal, N Jagadeesan and Vijaykumar Vyshak among others. Surprisingly, the Tamil Nadu’s Sai Sudharsan, who is a part of the Indian team playing in England, has not been named in the reported squad.

Heading a team is not something new for Tilak Varma as the youngster captained Hyderbad in the previous season on a number of occasions.

Last year, the BCCI decided that they’d scrap the zonal system, which divided 38 domestic teams into six zones. Instead, BCCI opted for four India teams: A, B, C, and D.

Now, BCCI decided they would get back to the zonal system. The zonal teams (North, East, North East, Central, West, and South) will be back. This means that more domestic performers will get a chance. And the number of Test cricketers who can participate can be increased as well. The move was confirmed in March after an BCCI Apex Council meeting, and it’ll be enacted now.
