In 2012, Sunrisers Hyderabad stepped into the IPL scene, replacing the Deccan Chargers and making their debut in 2013. The franchise underwent a change in ownership when the Sun TV Network took charge following the financial struggles that led to the bankruptcy of the Deccan Chronicle. The official announcement of the squad took place in Chennai on December 18, 2012.
The Sun TV Network secured ownership with a winning bid of ₹85.05 crore (US$11 million) per year for a five-year deal, marking the ownership transition. While Deccan Chargers won the 2009 edition, Sunrisers Hyderabad lifted the title in 2016 under David Warner’s leadership.

SRH Short Bio
Upon acquiring the team, the new owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad retained 20 players from the Chargers squad, with Kumar Sangakkara serving as the initial captain. However, Sunrisers faced challenges in forming a stable core during the first two years, experimenting with four captains – Sangakkara, Cameron White, Daren Sammy, and Shikhar Dhawan. While their bowling strength was evident, finding the optimal playing XI proved to be a struggle.
The team began to forge its identity in 2015 when David Warner took on the captaincy. Despite finishing sixth that year, Warner retained the captain’s role due to his outstanding performances. The turning point came in 2016 when Warner led Sunrisers to their maiden title. Under the cohesive leadership of Warner, head coach Tom Moody, mentor VVS Laxman, and bowling coach Muthiah Muralidaran, the team operated seamlessly over the subsequent years, with Rashid Khan emerging as a crucial asset.
In 2020, Trevor Bayliss replaced Moody as the head coach. However, following a disappointing 2021 season that led to Warner’s removal from the side and Kane Williamson assuming captaincy, Bayliss departed. This season also marked the end of Sunrisers’ association with Warner and Rashid, while Laxman left for the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy. Moody, who returned as the director of cricket in 2021, reassumed the role of head coach in 2022 but was later succeeded by Brian Lara.

SRH in IPL 2013:
Sunrisers Hyderabad marked their IPL debut in 2013, inheriting a solid foundation by retaining 20 players from the Chargers. Notable additions such as Thisara Perera, Darren Sammy, and Quinton de Kock bolstered the squad. Despite reaching the playoffs, the team faced elimination after a close encounter with Rajasthan Royals in the eliminator match. SRH in IPL 2014:
The 2014 season witnessed changes as the league contracted to eight teams with the departure of Pune Warriors India. Sunrisers retained two key players, Dale Steyn and Shikhar Dhawan, and entered the auction with a substantial purse. Shikhar Dhawan assumed the captaincy, supported by vice-captain Darren Sammy. The team secured a 6th-place finish with a balanced performance but fell short of a playoff berth.
SRH in IPL 2015:
In 2015, Sunrisers Hyderabad underwent significant changes. Retaining 13 players, the franchise appointed David Warner as the captain. Despite a change in leadership and Warner’s impressive individual performance, the team finished 6th, missing out on the playoffs. Warner’s consistent form earned him the Orange Cap, showcasing his prowess as a top-order batsman.

In 2016, the team clinched their maiden IPL title under David Warner’s captaincy. The subsequent seasons witnessed consistent playoff appearances, with standout performances from key players like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and David Warner, who secured the Purple and Orange Caps, respectively.
SRH in IPL 2017:
In 2017, Sunrisers Hyderabad retained 17 players and released six from their title-winning squad. With ₹45.1 crore spent at the auction and ₹20.9 crore remaining, the defending champions hosted both opening and closing ceremonies as per IPL norms. Finishing 3rd on the points table, they faced Kolkata Knight Riders in the eliminator at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Despite setting a below-par total of 128–7 in 20 overs, rain reduced Kolkata Knight Riders’ innings to six overs. With a revised target of 48, Knight Riders secured victory with seven wickets and four balls remaining. Bhuvneshwar Kumar retained the Purple Cap, and David Warner claimed the Orange Cap for his prolific batting.

The 2018 season brought new challenges, including the return of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals after a two-year suspension. Sunrisers retained only two players, releasing others due to the involvement of players in the 2013 IPL betting scandal. Their aggressive approach from the top, with Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma plummeting the bowlers, SRH became a feared side. Thanks to their approach, SRH reached the final of the IPL 2024. But they suffered an 8-wicket defeat in the final to KKR.

SRH team management did a sly piece of business buying Head at the IPL 2024 auction for just under Rs 7 crores. Head has an expansive range of shots and can turn any match in his team’s favour.
Pat Cummins:
Pat Cummins became the second-most expensive player in IPL 2024 Auction. The Aussie all-rounder fetched a whopping Rs. 20.50 crore at the auction. While several teams were interested in Cummins’ services, SRH went all out to secure his signing. SRH will be hoping Cummins turns out to justify every penny that was spent on him at the auction with some powerful performances.
