Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh left no stone unturned in ensuring that AUS were off to a flying start against Sri Lanka

Australia cricket team openers Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head are back to their destructive batting as they tore apart the Sri Lankan bowlers on Monday. Put in to bat first, the duo went after the hosts right from ball number 1 and took very little time to race to their fifties. The T20 World Cup 2026 group stage game against SL is a must win for Australia in order to qualify for the Super 8 stage without any hiccups and Head and Marsh left no stone unturned in ensuring that AUS were off to a flying start.

Head, Marsh go berserk

Head took just 27 deliveries to reach his half-century, his first in 13 T20I innings. He slammed seven fours and two sixes, playing at a strike rate of 193.10. His whirlwind knock eventually came to an end in the 8th over Dushan Hemantha finally managed to provide Sri Lanka with their first breakthrough. But the damage had already been done as Marsh and Head registered an opening stand of 104 runs.

Australia captain Marsh made an instant impact on his return, functioning in perfect sync with Head. The all-rounder had missed Australia’s first two T20 World Cup 2026 games due to internal testicular bleeding. Mitchell took 25 deliveries to reach his half-century and struck 8 fours and 2 sixes en route to his fifty. The reunion of Australia’s primary openers in T20Is came at the right time for the team and has served as a warning for the rest of the teams in the later on stage of the tournament.
