Shubman Gill, who was recently elevated as the Test captain, will now reportedly be named Suryakumar Yadav's deputy in Asia Cup 2025

India Test team captain Shubman Gill is all set to don the hat of vice-captain in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The Punjab batter took over the reins of the Test team from Rohit Sharma in June following the latter’s decision to retire from the longest format of the game. After a successful series against England where he led he team to two victories and a draw in five-matches, Gill is all set to get a new leadership role, this time in T20Is.

Gill to be Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in Asia Cup 2025?

As per Rev Sportz, sources claimed that Gill is likely to be elevated as the T20I vice-captain in the Asia Cup. This means he will replace Axar Patel, who was appointed as SKY’s deputy in the five-match series against England earlier this year. If Gill does replace Axar, then it hints at the BCCI’s plan to groom the star as the probable next all-format captain. Earlier in February, he was named Rohit Sharma’s deputy in Champions Trophy 2025.

As per reports, Gill is all set to return to T20Is after over a year. The Punjab batter last featured in the shortest format in the series against Sri Lanka in July 2024. In IPL 2025, Gill was GT’s second leading run-getter, having amassed 650 runs from 15 matches.

On Sunday, a report claimed that while the selectors were still not convinced about Gill’s inclusion for the Asia Cup. While the selectors are pondering on naming the star in the squad keeping in mind the West Indies Test series that start shortly after the conclusion of Asia Cup, they also feel that Gill’s experience will be needed for the T20 World Cup in 2026 which will be hosted by India.

Meanwhile, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav will take another week to complete his recovery from the sports hernia surgery and is expected to lead India in Asia Cup.
