In what could be a brilliant decision for India cricket team, Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be named the vice-captain for Champions Trophy 2025. The veteran pacer led India in two Tests in the recently concluded IND vs AUS Test series in Down Under. While Bumrah sustained a back spasm that saw him remain out of action in the latter half of the 5th Test, there has been no update from the BCCI medical team on the extent of his injury.
Bumrah to be vice-captain for Champions Trophy 2025?
As per Times of India, Bumrah is the frontrunner to become the vice-captain, provided there are no fitness concerns. The report states that the pacer is likely to become Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the marquee tournament. If named vice-captain, then the veteran pacer will replace Shubman Gill who was earlier named Rohit’s deputy during the Sri Lanka tour in 2024.

Bumrah proved his ability as skipper in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, winning one match while losing one. The pacer is one of India’s best bowlers across formats and will play a crucial role in spearheading the bowling line-up in CT 2025. However, it depends on if he will be fit for the tournament, given that he has had a hectic Test season coupled with an injury scare. While reports state that he is likely to miss IND vs ENG ODI series which will take place just before CT 2025, his participation in the marquee tournament is expected to be confirmed later this week when India are expected to announce the provisional squad.
