India cricket team captain Shubman Gill has been named the ICC Player of the Month for his phenomenal performance in the recently concluded IND vs ENG Test series. The five-match away series, which also marked his first as the Test skipper, saw the Punjab batter emerge as the leading run-scorer. Gill beat the likes of England captain Ben Stokes and South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder to bag the honour.
Shubman Gill is ICC Player of Month
In three Tests in the month of July, Gill amassed 567 runs, including a double hundred and a century in six innings. He averaged a mind boggling 94.50 last month. This is Gill’s fourth Player of the Month honour from the ICC, having won previously in February this year, and in January and September, 2023.
“It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July. This time it holds a lot more significance since it has come for my performances during my first Test series as captain. The double ton in Birmingham is obviously something I will cherish forever and will be one of the highlights of my tour to England,” Gill said after winning the award.
Gill finished the IND vs ENG series with 754 runs to his name, falling just 20 runs short of overtaking Sunil Gavaskar on the list of most runs scored by a batter in a Test series. The only Test that Gill failed to fire in was the IND vs ENG 3rd Test at Lord’s, London.
Gill is the first men’s player to have won the monthly award on four occasions, with Australia’s Ash Gardner and West Indies captain Hayley Matthews the only female players to have done so. With an average of 74.50 from 10 innings, Gill was also named the Player of the Series.
