"Gill hasn't done enough": Ex-selector wants Rahul as Test captain

Former Indian cricketer Kiran More has claimed that KL Rahul is the right choice for Test captaincy and not Shubman Gill

Former selection committee chairman Kiran More has backed KL Rahul to succeed Rohit Sharma as the new Test captain. His remarks come just ahead of the official announcement of the new skipper and the squad for the England Test series. Shubman Gill is tipped to be Sharma’s successor and has reportedly already met Gambhir and Agarkar to discuss the roadmap.

Rahul better than Gill for Test captaincy?

Speaking on JioHotstar, More reckoned that Gill hasn’t done enough in Test cricket to be named captain. He opined that it would be wise to make him the vice-captain for a couple of years and allow him to grow and gain experience. More picked KL Rahul as the next captain, dubbing him as the “right choice.”

I would go with KL Rahul—he’s an experienced campaigner. I don’t want to put too much pressure on Shubman Gill. He hasn’t done enough in Test cricket yet. He hasn’t played much domestic cricket either, so there’s a lot of learning still to do in the longer format. Let him grow—maybe he can be vice-captain for a year or two. For now, KL Rahul is the right choice. He has the experience, temperament, and communication skills needed to lead,” More said.

However, former Indian cricketer Saba Karim backed the idea of having a younger captain for the new WTC cycle. He claimed that Gill had proved his credentials as captain while leading GT in IPL 2025 and batted for the selectors to make a bold move and put a young gun in-charge.

You have Gill, Rahul, and Pant. Considering this is the start of a new WTC cycle, I would go with a young, talented leader— Gill. Although he’s yet to fully establish himself at the Test level, I’d like to see the selectors make a bold move. We’ve seen his leadership skills in the shorter format with GT, and he seems to be in a very happy space when leading. That should bode well for India,” Karim said.
