India cricket team selectors are yet to decide if they should include Shubman Gill in the squad for Asia Cup 2025. The 8-nation tournament, which will begin from September 9, will conclude on September 28 just days before the team’s next Test assignment – the two-match Test series against West Indies which begins on October 2. A report now suggests that the selectors are in two minds over Gill’s inclusion in the squad.
To play Gill in Asia Cup or to not to?
As per The Telegraph, sources claimed that the selectors aren’t convinced on naming Gill in the squad, keeping the upcoming Test series against West Indies in mind. However, they reportedly feel that Gill’s experience will be needed for the T20 World Cup in 2026 which will be hosted by India. Further, the report states that the selectors don’t want Gill to be a part of the 15-member squad but sit out of matches.
“Sources told The Telegraph that the selectors are still not convinced about Gill since the Test series against the West Indies begins within a week after the conclusion of the Asia Cup. However, there is firm belief that Gill’s experience will be needed when the T20 World Cup is held at home early next year,” the report stated.
Gill recently took over the reins of the Test team from Rohit Sharma and managed to lead the side to a 2-2 draw in the IND vs ENG Test series. He finished as the leading run-getter in the series, amassing 740 runs from 5 matches.
Last week, a report claimed that the Indian Test captain was all set to return to T20Is along with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in the Asia Cup. Gill last played a T20I back in Jul 2024 against Sri Lanka. The BCCI is expected to announce the preliminary squad for the Asia Cup soon.
