The non-inclusion of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad has raised a lot of eyebrows. Just about no one seems to be satisfied with explanation given by selector Ajit Agarkar, “It’s not his fault (Shreyas), but neither ours.” Former India spinner R Ashwin, especially, isn’t a happy man.

Speaking about both the batters missing out, Ashwin said both of them are selfless players and yet they have not been picked. Now they might play to save their spots. “Jaiswal got a chance in the Test matches, and he took it with both hands. Easily the most successful Test batter for India, who has made debut in the recent past,” Ashwin said.
“In whatever format you gave him a chance, he has excelled in them. What else can a player do, other than achieving excellence? What else can he do? Despite that, he lost his chance in that slot. He has to go back to the drawing board; I really wish him well. Not only has his slot gone, but someone with a leadership role has come in. Now he has just one slot left, now he has to fight with Abhishek Sharma to get a chance.”
R Ashwin Unimpressed with Misses
He added that now these two players won’t take any kind of risks. “Or else he has to go in the IPL, and play in the middle-order. He averages 36, and has a strike-rate of 165, it is difficult to find someone like a Jaiswal. I’ve seen him a lot of times, he just doesn’t play for himself, and even Shreyas Iyer. He doesn’t play for average, but plays for the strike-rate. It took a lot of time for India to get that brand of players. If I’m Jaiswal, or Shreyas now, I won’t take that risk. I have to save my spot.”
