Sanju Samson wants rule of releasing players gone from IPL, cites hardship after star's departure

Sanju Samson has revealed that letting go of Jos Buttler ahead of IPL 2025 was one of the hardest things for RR and himself

Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson opposed the rule of releasing players periodically from a franchise. His remarks come in the backdrop of RR having to part ways with Jos Buttler following his long association with the franchise. Ahead of IPL 2025, the Kerala keeper-batter stressed why it was important to retain and not release players.

Samson against releasing players in IPL

Speaking to JioHotstar, Samson revealed that letting go of Buttler was one of the most challenging things for him ahead of IPL 2025. The RR captain stated that Buttler’s release was hard for the entire franchise, the owners, the coaches, and everyone associated with the team.

If I could change one thing in the IPL, I would change the rule of releasing players. While it has its positives, on a personal level, you lose connections and relationships built over years,” Samson said.

He recalled times when he played under the England star’s captaincy in RR, explaining his deep connect with the latter.

Jos Buttler is one of my closest friends. We played together for 7 years, forming a long batting partnership. We knew each other so well and always kept in touch. He was like an elder brother to me,” Samson said.

Buttler’s association with RR

The former England captain made his way into RR from MI in 2018. He was a part of the franchise for six seasons, until 2024. Buttler was arguably one of the best and consistent batters for the Royals. He was Sanju Samson’s deputy when the latter took over the reins of the team. He now has found a new home in Gujarat Titans, with the one-time champions buying him for Rs 15.75 crore.

He was like an elder brother to me. When I became captain, he was my vice-captain and played a huge role in helping me lead the team. Even during the England series, I told him over dinner that I was still not over it,” Samson added.
