In an era where Multi-nation series’ are dead for a long time, three African nations might just come up with T20 tournament involving — South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. As per a report in Cricket Financial Journal, the proposal was discussed at a recent ICC Africa Regional Conference in Namibia. The vision though, is to have a six-team Africa Cup.

These three top-ranked African teams would be there in the tournament for sure, while the others will be determined through a qualifier, which would be held biennially. But the six-nation Africa Cup would possibly start from the next year, while this year, it would just be a tri-series. And it looks like, Namibia will host the first edition in August.

It is important to note that the T20 Africa Cup isn’t new, but it only involved associate nations, which was shut down due to financial challenges. This tournament would of course, give rise to more competition in the continent, and eventually the world as well. Meanwhile, a similar sort of a tournament is being looked at in Europe as well, but there is no clarity if the ECB is interested in the concept; England is the biggest team in Europe by miles, followed by Ireland and Scotland.
Coming back to the African tournament, there are talks of a possible revival of the Afro-Asia Cup. This was played way back in 2005 and 2007, but comes with its own set of challenges. But that, to a large extent depends on the BCCI as well, who are the single-largest players in this. They could very well rule out the possibility of Indian players playing with Pakistan.
