Uncertainty looms over India cricket team captain Rohit Sharma‘s future in Tests following yet another failure in IND vs AUS 4th Test. The Hitman has been in poor form in the latter half of 2024, prompting speculations of his retirement. In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he has only managed to score 31 runs in five innings as he failed to break free from the shackles of poor form that began in the series against Bangladesh at home. While it was expected that discussions would be held between chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Rohit, a new report has shed more light on the matter.
Rohit Sharma to lead India in IND vs AUS 5th Test?
As per Cricbuzz, discussions between the selectors and Rohit will take place only after IND vs AUS 5th Test in Sydney. The report states that the Hitman will continue to lead the side and be a part of the playing XI unless he voluntarily decides to step aside. Further, those with decision making powers are reportedly hoping that Rohit will “roar back to form”, citing the example of Steve Smith who had a poor start to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but slammed two back-to-back centuries in the last two matches.

What Rohit said after IND vs AUS 4th Test loss?
“I stand where I am standing today. There’s nothing to think about what has happened in the past. Obviously, few results haven’t gone our way. As a captain, yes, that is disappointing,” Rohit Sharma had said.
As a captain, Rohit has faced severe backlash over the last three months. In a first in the history of the game, India were whitewashed at home at the hands of New Zealand, with Sharma recording an unecessary feat. His losing streak continued as India were handed a 10-wicket defeat in the IND vs AUS 2nd Test in Adelaide despite beginning the series with a 295-run win Perth. While the 3rd Test ended in a draw, Rohit Sharma and co. were handed a 184-run defeat in Melbourne, tipping the scale of the series in the favour of the Aussies.
“Yes, as a batter as well, a lot of things that I am trying to do are not falling into place. But, mentally, it’s disturbing without a doubt. If you have come here, you want to successfully do what you are supposed to. If those things don’t fall in place, that’s a big disappointment,” Sharma added.
