Finch holds the record for the highest ever individual score in T20Is after he scored 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018.

Brian Lara’s 400*, Rohit Sharma’s 264 and Aaron Finch’s 172—these are the highest individual scores in each format of the game. While Wiaan Mulder came close to breaking Lara’s record earlier in the year against Zimbabwe, if you ask Finch, he thinks that his record will be the first to go down.

Finch makes big T20 World Cup 2026 prediction

The former Australia captain was asked the question on X (formerly Twitter), and he humbly wrote ‘172’ in reply, indicating which record he would break first. Finch has a reason for his answer as well. He understands that the landscape of T20I cricket has changed. Finch went as far as claiming that his record of the highest individual T20I score will be broken at the T20 World Cup 2026.

“I’m pretty sure it’ll be broken at this T20 World Cup. There’ll be some really good batting wickets, and the next generation’s power and skill are on another level,” Finch wrote on X.

Who can break Finch’s record?

Breaking the record won’t be that easy. But there are a few candidates who can do it. Like Finch, they are openers. On top of that list is the current T20I number one-ranked batter, Abhishek Sharma. Just last year in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he scored 141 from 55 balls at a strike rate of 256.36.

Others who come close might be England’s openers, Phil Salt or Jos Buttler. Both have been in excellent form recently. In September, Salt scored 141* from 60 balls against South Africa. In the same game, Buttler had smashed 83 from 30 balls.
