India cricket team decided to bench at out-of-form Rohit Sharma for IND vs AUS 5th Test in Sydney. A report has claimed that the Hitman was dropped from the side after the coach had consulted chief selector Ajit Agarkar and the other selectors. The clamour to drop Rohit Sharma from the playing XI grew louder after his twin failure in Melbourne, with his poor form ensuing and costing India dearly in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Who all were involved in dropping Rohit Sharma?
As per RevSportz, the decision to drop Rohit was not just head coach Gautam Gambhir’s. The call was taken after consulting Agarkar while the rest of the selectors were also kept in loop. Further, the report states that while Rohit wanted to play IND vs AUS 5th Test in Sydney, Gambhir preferred to have Shubman Gill in the playing XI for the must-win encounter.

Rohit decided to opt himself out of the Sydney Test in order to pave way for Gill’s return to the XI. The Indian skipper has come under fire for his poor form since the latter half of 2024, failing to break free from the shackles of poor form that begin with the series at home against Bangladesh. In the ongoing BGT series, Sharma managed to score only 31 runs in five innings, failing to fire both in the middle-order as well as the opener.
Reports of an alleged rift between Gambhir and the rest of the team surfaced ahead of the 5th Test. A frustrated head coach had reportedly served an ultimatum to the team’s seniors to adhere to the discussed strategy or leave the side. However, stand-in skipper Bumrah said that the team had unselfish players and that a ‘great captain’ Rohit had opted to rest himself for the good of the team.
