As per the original plan, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were to play just 2 matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Rohit Sharma has left Mumbai’s team and won’t feature in the remainder of the 2025-26 Vijay Hazare Trophy. The former India captain was included in Mumbai’s squad for the first two matches. It was understood that Rohit, like other big-name players, would play just 2 matches.

VHT over for Rohit Sharma

According to Indian Express journalist Devendra Pandey, Rohit has flown home already. Rohit had played an unbeaten knock of 155 against Assam but registered a golden duck against Uttarakhand. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will announce his replacement soon, as Mumbai are to face Chhattisgarh on December 29. At the moment, Mumbai is atop the points table in Group C and is expected to qualify for the quarterfinal.

Virat Kohli ready to play one more game

Unlike Rohit, Virat Kohli could play another match for Delhi. Initially, he too was expected to play just 2 matches. But, according to Dainik Jagran journalist Abhishek Tripathi, Kohli could play Delhi’s fixture against Railways on January 6. He has left Bengaluru for now but might return.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to announce the squad for the India vs New Zealand ODI series. There’s no information regarding the pre-series camp either. If it’s plausible to attend the camp and play for Delhi, Kohli will play the penultimate group stage match.

Delhi, like Mumbai, is in a prime position to qualify for the VHT quarterfinal as the table toppers in Group D, but won’t mind having Kohli in the team. He has been their best batter, having top-scored and won the ‘player of the match’ award in the first two matches. Kohli scored 131 from 101 against Andhra Pradesh and backed that up with a 77-run knock against Gujarat.
