Now, that Rohit Sharma has opted to take ‘rest’ from the IND vs AUS Sydney Test, the big question is, whether he will continue as the Test captain, after this series? Now, there is still time for India to play another Test, but before that, there is the Champions Trophy 2025 coming up, and with Jasprit Bumrah leading the side now, one must admit, that Rohit might just lose his ODI captaincy as well.
Rohit Sharma vs Hardik Pandya for ODI Captaincy
As per a report in MyKhel, the BCCI is set to discuss the leadership options for the Champions Trophy, set to take place in Feb, in Pakistan and Dubai. Mind you, Rohit Sharma has already retired from the T20Is, after he led India to the T20 World Cup trophy, and last played in ODI vs Sri Lanka in August.
With this, the board might just be looking at a few other options for ODI captaincy. The report further suggests that if Rohit’s captaincy is discussed, then all-rounder Hardik Pandya could be considered for the top job. The latter already has experience of leading India in both the white-ball formats.
Hardik Strongest Contender
“Hardik has the knack for leading in high-pressure situations, and his experience as an all-rounder and leader makes him an ideal choice for an ICC tournament like the Champions Trophy,” a source told MyKhel. Meanwhile, the other contenders who could make the cut are — Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill. But then Hardik Pandya might just be the strongest contender right now.

“Gill needs more grooming to mature into a leader, and SKY’s ODI performances haven’t been convincing enough. Hardik remains the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs if Rohit is unavailable,” the source added.
