Rishabh Pant joined the long list of India Test team stars who absolutely failed to fire in the second leg of the Ranji Trophy. After being dismissed for just 1 run in the 1st innings of the SAU vs DEL contest, the southpaw was sent packing for 17 runs in the 2nd innings. The game against Saurashtra marked Pant’s return to the domestic red-ball tournament for the first time in seven years.
Pant’s Ranji return ends on disastrous note
Ravindra Jadeja had the last laugh in the second innings as he got rid of Pant for 17 runs off 26 deliveries. The Saurashtra all-rounder is arguably the best performer among the Test cricketers taking part in the first round matches of the second leg of Ranji. Pant was caught behind by Sheldon Jackson, bringing the curtains down on what was a miserable innings. He only managed to score one boundary in his 17-run knock.

In the 1st innings, Pant was dismissed cheaply for just 1 run, thanks to D Jadeja. He lasted only for ten deliveries before he was caught out by Prem Mankad. In both the innings, the southpaw came out to bat at a position much below the number in which he usually does. And on both these occasions, he failed to fire as his poor form ensued.
After making his comeback to Tests in 2024 following a horrific car crash in December 2023, Pant excelled at home but failed to fire in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia. He managed to score just 255 runs in 9 innings, failing to convert good starts into great knocks on most occasions, mainly due to his shot selection. Apart from this match, the southpaw has played just 17 Ranji Trophy matches, a record that is too poor for a player of his stature.
