Ravindra Jadeja revives India’s hopes with Manchester special
Ravindra Jadeja walked into bat at the stroke of lunch on the fall of Shubman Gill’s wicket. With Rishabh Pant injured, the onus was on Jadeja to bat for long enough to push India towards a draw.
He took to that task effectively, blocking with purpose. The left hander rotated the strike well and cashed on the loose deliveries to score a fine half century. At the Tea break, Jadeja had batted through 102 deliveries for his 53.
It was Jadeja’s 5th consecutive 50 in the India vs England series. The 36-year-old scored fifties in both innings at Lord’s, and repeated the same at Old Trafford. It is the most 50+ scores by an Indian batsman batting at 6 or below. VVS Laxman also jointly holds the record with as many half centuries in the 2002 series against the West Indies.
Post Tea, Jadeja changed gears and quickly raced through to a century. With England bowling Liam Dawson and Joe Root for large parts, the veteran picked his spots to get to his 5th Test century. It was his 2nd century in England, becoming the first Indian to score two Test hundreds from No.6 or lower in England.
