Shaheen Afridi's Lahore Qalandars have been rocked with controversies at the start of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Lahore Qalandars’ defeat to Karachi Kings on Sunday will be remembered for a long time in the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) history. In a matter of hours, the franchise found itself at the centre of two separate controversies — one off the field involving an alleged breach of security protocols and another on it that directly influenced the outcome of the match.

Questions over discipline away from the ground, followed by a crucial umpiring decision in the final over that swung the game.

Security breach allegations for Shaheen Afridi

The first signs of trouble came off the field, with Punjab Police accusing Shaheen Shah Afridi and Sikandar Raza of violating security protocols at the team hotel. According to an official letter, four unauthorised individuals were escorted to a player’s room despite clear refusals from PSL and PCB security officials.

The request had initially been made through proper channels and turned down. Even a follow-up attempt reportedly did not get approval. Yet, the players allegedly brought the visitors in, bypassing on-duty security personnel. The group is said to have remained inside for nearly three hours.

This is not a minor procedural lapse. The PSL has operated under strict security frameworks ever since international cricket returned to Pakistan, and even more so this season with matches being played without crowds due to the ongoing West Asia situation. Any breach, especially involving players, raises serious concerns. The franchise has acknowledged the issue but stopped short of offering a detailed explanation, with discussions ongoing with the league.

Five-run penalty flips match in Karachi’s favour

If the off-field controversy wasn’t enough, what followed on the field sealed Lahore’s fate and gave a major embarrassment to Afridi’s Qalandars.

Karachi Kings needed 14 runs in the final over when an unusual sequence caught the umpires’ attention. Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf and Fakhar Zaman were seen handling the ball together just before the over began. Umpire Faisal Afridi stepped in immediately, calling for the ball to be checked.

After a lengthy discussion, the umpires ruled that the condition of the ball had been altered. The punishment was given. Five penalty runs were awarded to Karachi, reducing the target to nine off six balls. From there, the chase became straightforward, and Karachi sealed a four-wicket win.

Shaheen Afridi kept his response measured after the game. “I don’t know about this and we’ll see if it’s there in the camera and discuss what it is. Actually, five runs taken and we can’t do anything. Like, you can’t say. Not for me, my team is fighting till the last ball, which I need for every game.”

Sikandar Raza, too, denied any wrongdoing, insisting there was no attempt to tamper with the ball and that he was merely trying to shine it. “I can only speak about myself. There was never any attempt on my part to change the condition of the ball, or even to try. All I remember is that when I was trying to dry the ball and make it shine, the umpires asked us not to dry it under the shirt. Who are they accusing? Unless we don’t see the proof, I think it’s a big decision. I have not been called for an enquiry.”
