Prithvi Shaw to make Maharashtra debut, Ruturaj Gaikwad snubbed as Buchi Babu captain

The Buchi Babu tournament will commence on August 18.

The Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) has announced its squad for the Buchi Babu Multi-Day Tournament 2025. Maharashtra will play three 3-day league stage matches. The tournament organised by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association has its own unique rules. In the first innings, each team plays 90 overs, but that’s cut down to 45 overs in the second innings.

Buchi Babu: Maharashtra’s captain & new beginnings for Prithvi Shaw

Ankit Bawne has been named Maharashtra’s captain over Ruturaj Gaikwad, who is their Ranji Trophy captain. Bawne was actually leading the team in Gaikwad’s absence against Tripura in January. The middle-order batter is Maharashtra’s second-most capped skipper and has led them on and off from 2017 to 2025.

Lack of availability is why the MCA hasn’t named Gaikwad as captain. The opener has been selected for the West Zone team in the Duleep Trophy 2025-26. Since the zonal tournament begins on August 28, Gaikwad won’t be able to play all of the matches for Maharashtra, and therefore, Bawne has been picked as skipper.

Prithvi Shaw, who recently switched from Mumbai, will be making his Maharashtra debut. It’ll be an exciting new chapter for Prithvi, who’s looking to turn his career around. He might even face his old Mumbai teammates, Sarfaraz Khan, Musheer Khan, and Ayush Mhatre, if both teams qualify for the final.

Maharashtra will face Chhattisgarh in their Round 1 match from August 18 to 20 at the Gurunanak College. Their Round 2 opponents will be TNCA President’s XI, whom they’ll face at the Gojan College B Ground from August 22 to 24. Their final league stage match will be against HPCA at the Murugappa Ground from August 26 to 28.

If Maharashtra tops Group A, they’ll face one of Railways, Jammu & Kashmir, Baroda, or Odisha in the first semifinal, which will take place from August 31 to September 3.
